ACLS Instructor Training - Course Description

The Instructor course is now comprised of two separate components. These components include the Core Instructor Course and a Discipline Specific Module. Both training components MUST be completed prior to moving onto the remaining steps needed to complete your certification as an ACLS Instructor.

ACLS Instructor Course Prerequisite
A current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Card (HCP)
A current American Heart Association (ACLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support card

ACLS Instructor - Core Instructor Course (CIC)
The Core ACLS Instructor Course is a multi-media tool designed to provide a foundation for teaching and facilitating regardless of an instructor candidate's area of interest and specialization. This course provides consistent and uniform instructor training, eliminating material that is repetitive across the various disciplines, with the goal of creating more effective Emergency Cardiac Care (ECC) instructors.

This portion of the course MUST be completed by the instructor candidate PRIOR to attending the discipline specific module. This will be done via the CDROM that is included with the Core Instructor Course Workbook that will be provided by NPSC as part of the Instructor Course registration.

ACLS Instructor - Discipline Specific Module (DSM)
The Discipline Specific ACLS Instructor Module will take place at our American Heart Association authorized training center and uses a combination of various instructor-led and video based lessons, in addition to the resuscitation team concept. This latter concept gives the instructor candidate the opportunity to practice teaching the dynamics of responding to resuscitation as part of a team in simulated cases with the emphasis on effective communication and teamwork.

CME /CE Credit
Thirty (15) contact hours of Continuing Education will be given if the student completes this course with a passing score.

Content / Modules
Help providers recognize cardio-pulmonary distress symptoms of pediatric victims, and thus begin stabilization prior to arrest.
Key topics covered:
Pediatric assessment
Respiratory compromise and arrest recognition and management
Circulatory compromise and arrest recognition and management
Shock recognition and management
Resuscitation team concept

Features & Benefits
This course addresses a gap in the number of healthcare providers who see pediatric patients, and do not require the advanced skills of PALS.
The main focus of PEARS is prevention, and specifically, the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress. Through unique learning tools, such as video-based simulation, providers can see and hear critically ill children with whom they do not typically come in contact, equipping them to recognize the symptoms of pediatric victims, and thus begin stabilization prior to arrest.
The course is video-based with instructor-led discussion and simulation. Students participate in, practice and complete various skills and learning stations.

Audience
For any healthcare provider who might encounter pediatric patients in their profession.
Course is not intended for those staff credentialed for advanced pediatric skills that routinely provide pediatric care.

1 PALS Instructor Level Training

The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor certification offered by NPSC is a three-day (30 hour) course designed to develop proficiency in teaching, organizing and conducting a provider course.  Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructors must have a firm working knowledge of the PALS material. Participants are expected to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of emergency cardiac care (ECC). Currently accepted principles of adult learning, the use of interactive teaching strategies, and the ability to sequence instruction and evaluate progress are essential parts of the course. The purpose is to provide an adult education experience for healthcare professionals who manage cardiac arrest, shock and respiratory failure in infants and children.

The goal of the Pediatric Advanced Life Support Instructor Course taught by NPSC is to provide the potential instructor candidate the ability to assist the student with:

  • Information needed to recognize infants and children at risk for cardiopulmonary arrest
  • Information and strategies needed to prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children
  • The cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to resuscitate and stabilize infants and children in respiratory failure, shock or cardiopulmonary arrest.

Prerequisite

A current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Card (HCP) and a current American Heart Association (PALS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support Card; (retained by NPSC)

Intended Audience:
