The accepted principles of adult learning include the use of interactive teaching strategies.  The ability to sequence instruction and evaluate progress is the essential part of this strategy.  Instructor applicants are expected to demonstrate in-depth factual knowledge of emergency cardiovascular care.  Didactic and hands-on skills are presented to effectively teach others to provide ACLS.  Candidates will learn how to make effective presentations of ACLS information and materials, manage learning stations according to the resuscitation team concept and function as the leader in all components of an ACLS Provider course. Included are role-playing and class discussions of teaching techniques.

This program is approved by and meets the behavioral objectives of the AHA for ACLS instruction and is based upon the most recent guidelines published by the AHA.

Course Length:
Two-day intensive training; (15) hours in duration.

The course covers:

  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • 10 core cases of the ACLS program
  • Airway management and related pharmacology
  • Simple VF/VT, complex VF/VT, PEA and Asystole
  • Four types of pre-arrest emergencies (bradycardia, stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia)
  • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team

Course Objectives:

  1. Organize and conduct a ACLS course using the DVD/ lesson maps in the ACLS instructor materials
  2. Instruct on the team concept of ACLS management
  3. Guide and evaluate students during practice stations and Megacode using the ACLS skills testing checklist
  4. Understand the concept of student remediation and demonstrate effective remediation techniques
  5. Explain AHA and Training Center policies concerning ACLS courses, completion of course forms, and the process for instructor renewal
  6. Pass skills tests with 100% and written exam with 90% or better

Intended Audience:
Potential instructors must be licensed or certified in a healthcare occupation in which ACLS skill are within their scope of practice.  Emergency, intensive care or critical care department personnel; emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Course Prerequisites:

  1. A current AHA ACLS provider card
  2. A current AHA BLS provider card
  3. View 2015 Guideline ACLS Product and Course Orientation on the Instructor Network under ACLS courses
  4. A willingness to teach the scientific and program guidelines of the American Heart Association
  5. Any instructor candidate not aligning with NPSC will need a letter from a current TC stating the instructor candidate is aligning with them & they will complete the monitoring process
  6. A commitment to teach two courses per year according to AHA guidelines
  7. Complete the pre-course checklist
  8. Complete the online pre-test (instructions in front of provider manual)
