With this certification, the BLS Instructor has the ability to teach any American Heart Association HS Course including Heartsaver First Aid, Heartsaver CPR, Heartsaver AED, Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid, Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogen, and other Heartsaver courses.
A well-trained BLS/HS instructor is the best tool the AHA has to fulfill its mission in reducing disability and death caused by heart disease and stroke. The more skilled the BLS instructors are the more Healthcare Professionals will be refined in providing CPR, early defibrillation, and advanced life support skills.
This program is approved by and meets the behavioral objectives of the AHA for HS and BLS instruction and is based upon the most recent guidelines published by the AHA.
Course Length:
One-day intensive training, 8-10 hours in duration.
Course Objectives:
- Organize and conduct a HS & a BLS course using the DVD/ lesson maps in the HS instructor materials
- Guide and evaluate students during practice stations and HS & BLS skills testing checklist
- Understand the concept of student remediation and demonstrate effective remediation techniques
- Explain AHA and Training Center policies concerning HS courses, completion of course forms, and the process for instructor renewal
- Pass skills exams with 100% and written exam with 84% or better
Intended Audience:
(HS Instructor)
The Heartsaver Instructor course meets the needs of lay individuals in business, community, and school settings who wish to become Instructors. The expanding market of non-medical Training Sites, created a need for HS Instructor level that did not require an entry level of Healthcare provider skills.
(BLS Instructor)
Currently Active personnel staffing emergency, intensive care or critical care departments; emergency medical providers such as physicians, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics, respiratory therapists and other professionals who may respond to a cardiovascular emergency.
Course Prerequisite: (Required for Instructor completion card)
- A current AHA HS provider card (if will be doing Heartsaver courses)
- A current AHA BLS provider card
- Print, review & bring a copy of the Instructor Candidate Workbook
- Review the BLS Product and Course Orientation on the Instructor Network.
- A letter from a Training Center Coordinator indicating that the TC will accept you as an instructor if not aligning with NPSC
- A willingness to teach the scientific and program guidelines of the American Heart Association
- A commitment to teach two courses per year according to AHA guidelines
